Jail History and Structure

In 1981, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Fairbanks. The justice center houses the Fairbanks North Star Borough County county sheriff, Fairbanks police department offices, and the North Pole Jail. The Fairbanks North Star Borough County county sheriff is the general overseer of the North Pole Jail. Originally, the North Pole Jail could house approximately 1979 inmates.

Over the years, the North Pole Jail has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Fairbanks North Star Borough County county.

Juvenile Detention Center

It is part and parcel of North Pole Jail but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The North Pole Jail has a 147-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the North Pole Jail.

The North Pole Jail comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center. During working hours, the staffing ratio is 1 to 9, and during sleeping hours, the ratio is 1 to 12. The youth detained in the North Pole Jail is engaged daily to mitigate any room for idleness.
