Jail History and Structure

In 1979, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Tucson. The justice center houses the Pima County county sheriff, Tucson police department offices, and the Pima County Jail. The Pima County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Pima County Jail. Originally, the Pima County Jail could house approximately 2061 inmates.

Over the years, the Pima County Jail has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Pima County county.

Juvenile Detention Center

It is part and parcel of Pima County Jail but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Pima County Jail has a 129-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the Pima County Jail.

The Pima County Jail comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center. During working hours, the staffing ratio is 1 to 9, and during sleeping hours, the ratio is 1 to 11. The youth detained in the Pima County Jail is engaged daily to mitigate any room for idleness. Upon the arrival of any youth at the Pima County Jail, he or she will be informed of the charges and rights.

Jail Medical Facilities

The Pima County Jail has medical facilities to promote the well-being of the inmates. In 2010, a mental health unit was established at the Pima County Jail. This medical unit aims at handling any mental illness among the Pima County Jail inmates. In 2012, a suicide precaution unit was established. This unit was meant to cater to Pima County Jail inmates who attempted suicide at one point. The unit comprises special cells where the Pima County Jail inmates participate in daily group activities, contact their loved ones frequently and attend therapy sessions. There is also a general medical facility at the Pima County Jail where inmates can seek medication when unwell.
