In 1984, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Saint Augustine. The justice center houses the St. Johns County county sheriff, Saint Augustine police department offices, and the St. Johns County Detention Center. The St. Johns County county sheriff is the general overseer of the St. Johns County Detention Center. Originally, the St. Johns County Detention Center could house approximately 1481 inmates.
