In 1990, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Cherokee. The justice center houses the Cherokee County county sheriff, Cherokee police department offices, and the Northwest Iowa YES Center. The Cherokee County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Northwest Iowa YES Center. Originally, the Northwest Iowa YES Center could house approximately 2371 inmates.
