In 1984, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Wichita. The justice center houses the Sedgwick County county sheriff, Wichita police department offices, and the Sedgwick County Residential Center. The Sedgwick County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Sedgwick County Residential Center. Originally, the Sedgwick County Residential Center could house approximately 1534 inmates.
