Jail History and Structure

In 1983, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Grand Marais. The justice center houses the Cook County county sheriff, Grand Marais police department offices, and the Cook County Law Enforcement Center. The Cook County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Cook County Law Enforcement Center. Originally, the Cook County Law Enforcement Center could house approximately 1763 inmates.

Over the years, the Cook County Law Enforcement Center has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Cook County county.

Juvenile Detention Center

It is part and parcel of Cook County Law Enforcement Center but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Cook County Law Enforcement Center has a 143-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the Cook County Law Enforcement Center.

The Cook County Law Enforcement Center comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center. During working hours, the staffing ratio is 1 to 10, and during sleeping hours, the ratio is 1 to 12. The youth detained in the Cook County Law Enforcement Center is engaged daily to mitigate any room for idleness. Upon the arrival of any youth at the Cook County Law Enforcement Center, he or she will be informed of the charges and rights.
