Jail History and Structure
In 1976, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Mount Vernon. The justice center houses the Lawrence County county sheriff, Mount Vernon police department offices, and the Lawrence County Jail. The Lawrence County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Lawrence County Jail. Originally, the Lawrence County Jail could house approximately 2055 inmates.
