In 1983, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown New Madrid. The justice center houses the New Madrid County county sheriff, New Madrid police department offices, and the New Madrid County Jail. The New Madrid County county sheriff is the general overseer of the New Madrid County Jail. Originally, the New Madrid County Jail could house approximately 1913 inmates.
