Jail History and Structure
In 1977, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Hackensack. The justice center houses the Bergen County county sheriff, Hackensack police department offices, and the Bergen County Jail. The Bergen County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Bergen County Jail. Originally, the Bergen County Jail could house approximately 2268 inmates.
Over the years, the Bergen County Jail has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Bergen County county.
Juvenile Detention Center
It is part and parcel of Bergen County Jail but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Bergen County Jail has a 147-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the Bergen County Jail.
The Bergen County Jail comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center. During working hours, the staffing ratio is 1 to 10, and during sleeping hours, the ratio is 1 to 16. The youth detained in the Bergen County Jail is engaged daily to mitigate any room for idleness. Upon the arrival of any youth at the Bergen County Jail, he or she will be informed of the charges and rights.
