Jail History and Structure
In 1978, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Boone. The justice center houses the Watauga County county sheriff, Boone police department offices, and the Watauga County Detention Center. The Watauga County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Watauga County Detention Center. Originally, the Watauga County Detention Center could house approximately 2386 inmates.
Over the years, the Watauga County Detention Center has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Watauga County county.
Juvenile Detention Center
It is part and parcel of Watauga County Detention Center but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Watauga County Detention Center has a 153-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the Watauga County Detention Center.
The Watauga County Detention Center comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center. During working hours, the staffing ratio is 1 to 7, and during sleeping hours, the ratio is 1 to 15.
