Jail History and Structure

In 1980, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Fort Gaines. The justice center houses the Clay County county sheriff, Fort Gaines police department offices, and the Clay County Jail. The Clay County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Clay County Jail. Originally, the Clay County Jail could house approximately 1775 inmates.

Over the years, the Clay County Jail has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Clay County county.

Juvenile Detention Center

It is part and parcel of Clay County Jail but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Clay County Jail has a 121-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the Clay County Jail.

The Clay County Jail comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center.
