Jail History and Structure

In 1977, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Howard. The justice center houses the Elk County county sheriff, Howard police department offices, and the Elk County Jail. The Elk County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Elk County Jail. Originally, the Elk County Jail could house approximately 1958 inmates.

Over the years, the Elk County Jail has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Elk County county.

Juvenile Detention Center

It is part and parcel of Elk County Jail but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Elk County Jail has a 155-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the Elk County Jail.

The Elk County Jail comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center.
