Jail History and Structure
In 1986, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Owatonna. The justice center houses the Steele County county sheriff, Owatonna police department offices, and the Steele County Detention Center. The Steele County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Steele County Detention Center. Originally, the Steele County Detention Center could house approximately 1489 inmates.
