In 1988, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Carlsbad. The justice center houses the Eddy County county sheriff, Carlsbad police department offices, and the Eddy County Detention Center. The Eddy County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Eddy County Detention Center. Originally, the Eddy County Detention Center could house approximately 1861 inmates.
