Jail History and Structure

In 1978, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Jamaica. The justice center houses the Queens County county sheriff, Jamaica police department offices, and the Queens County Jail. The Queens County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Queens County Jail. Originally, the Queens County Jail could house approximately 1518 inmates.

Over the years, the Queens County Jail has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Queens County county.

Juvenile Detention Center

It is part and parcel of Queens County Jail but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Queens County Jail has a 158-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the Queens County Jail.

The Queens County Jail comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center. During working hours, the staffing ratio is 1 to 8, and during sleeping hours, the ratio is 1 to 15. The youth detained in the Queens County Jail is engaged daily to mitigate any room for idleness. Upon the arrival of any youth at the Queens County Jail, he or she will be informed of the charges and rights.
