Jail History and Structure

In 1982, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Murphy. The justice center houses the Cherokee County county sheriff, Murphy police department offices, and the Cherokee County Detention Center. The Cherokee County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Cherokee County Detention Center. Originally, the Cherokee County Detention Center could house approximately 2227 inmates.

Over the years, the Cherokee County Detention Center has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Cherokee County county.

Juvenile Detention Center

It is part and parcel of Cherokee County Detention Center but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Cherokee County Detention Center has a 154-bed capacity. The Cherokee County Detention Center comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center.
