Jail History and Structure

In 1982, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Valley City. The justice center houses the Barnes County county sheriff, Valley City police department offices, and the Barnes County Jail. The Barnes County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Barnes County Jail. Originally, the Barnes County Jail could house approximately 2478 inmates.

Over the years, the Barnes County Jail has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Barnes County county.
