Jail History and Structure
In 1986, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Gainesville. The justice center houses the Alachua County county sheriff, Gainesville police department offices, and the Alachua County Jail. The Alachua County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Alachua County Jail. Originally, the Alachua County Jail could house approximately 2121 inmates.
