Jail History and Structure

In 1986, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Monroe. The justice center houses the Walton County county sheriff, Monroe police department offices, and the Walton County Detention Center. The Walton County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Walton County Detention Center. Originally, the Walton County Detention Center could house approximately 2217 inmates.

Over the years, the Walton County Detention Center has undergone numerous modifications and eventually became one of the largest facilities in the Walton County county.

Juvenile Detention Center

It is part and parcel of Walton County Detention Center but deals with the detention and correction of offensive youths. The Walton County Detention Center has a 137-bed capacity. Counselling, health assessments, recreation, education, and intervention services are provided to the youth held at the Walton County Detention Center.

The Walton County Detention Center comprises three units: the girl’s detention unit, the boy’s detention unit, and the detention control center. During working hours, the staffing ratio is 1 to 7, and during sleeping hours, the ratio is 1 to 13. The youth detained in the Walton County Detention Center is engaged daily to mitigate any room for idleness. Upon the arrival of any youth at the Walton County Detention Center, he or she will be informed of the charges and rights.

The Walton County Detention Center has medical facilities to promote the well-being of the inmates. In 2008, a mental health unit was established at the Walton County Detention Center. This medical unit aims at handling any mental illness among the Walton County Detention Center inmates. In 2011, a suicide precaution unit was established. This unit was meant to cater to Walton County Detention Center inmates who attempted suicide at one point. The unit comprises special cells where the Walton County Detention Center inmates participate in daily group activities, contact their loved ones frequently and attend therapy sessions.
