In 1977, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Leonardtown. The justice center houses the St. Mary’s County county sheriff, Leonardtown police department offices, and the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. The St. Mary’s County county sheriff is the general overseer of the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. Originally, the St. Mary’s County Detention Center could house approximately 2130 inmates.
