In 1979, a criminal justice center was constructed in downtown Fort Yates. The justice center houses the Sioux County county sheriff, Fort Yates police department offices, and the Sioux County Jail. The Sioux County county sheriff is the general overseer of the Sioux County Jail. Originally, the Sioux County Jail could house approximately 2073 inmates.
